Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting police operations and improving officers’ welfare as part of the effort to combat banditry and insecurity in the state. He made the pledge during a courtesy visit by Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) Executive Secretary Mohammed Sheidu and his delegation to the Government House in Gusau. The NPTF team was in Zamfara to inspect the newly constructed special‑forces barracks funded by the Police Trust Fund.
Governor Lawal said his administration is ready to work closely with the police to enhance security and boost welfare. He highlighted ongoing projects, including the renovation of the Zamfara police headquarters and the construction of new facilities at the Zamfara Mobile Command. The governor lamented the poor condition of police facilities nationwide, calling them unacceptable for an institution tasked with delivering effective security. Drawing on his experience as a member of the Presidential Committee on Police Reform, which inspected police colleges and the Police Staff College, Lawal stressed the need for a complete overhaul of police welfare to enable officers to perform effectively.
To further support the police, the governor directed the state Commissioner for Housing to coordinate with the NPTF to allocate land for a proposed police housing estate in Zamfara, assuring that suitable land would be provided immediately. Earlier, NPTF Executive Secretary Mohammed Sheidu praised Governor Lawal for his cooperation and support in improving police welfare and infrastructure in the state.
The visit and ensuing discussions underscore the importance of collaboration between state governments and the police in addressing insecurity and strengthening law‑enforcement capabilities.
