NNPP Loses Deputy Chairman to Internal Crisis

Another NNPP lawmaker dumps party

A member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Hon. Engr. Sagir Ibrahim Koki, has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing persistent leadership crises at the party’s national level. Koki, who represents Kano Municipal Federal Constituency and serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources, submitted his resignation letter on November 11, 2025.

In the letter addressed to the Zaitawa Ward Chairperson, Koki explained that the ongoing internal crisis at the party’s centre had hindered his ability to effectively represent his constituents. He stated that the crisis had made it “difficult, if not impossible” for him to discharge his duties and provide the desired representation in the House of Representatives.

Koki expressed gratitude to the NNPP for providing him with a platform to serve, describing the experience as invaluable. He noted that his resignation is in line with Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution and the party’s constitution. This development comes just two days after another NNPP member, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The resignation of Koki and Kofa may indicate deeper issues within the NNPP, potentially affecting the party’s stability and cohesion. As a member of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources, Koki’s departure may also impact the committee’s work and the representation of his constituents’ interests.

The NNPP has faced internal challenges in recent times, which may have contributed to the decision of these lawmakers to leave the party. The party’s leadership will likely need to address these issues to prevent further defections and maintain its strength in the House of Representatives. With Koki’s resignation, the NNPP will have to reorganize its representation in the House Committee on Petroleum Resources and potentially adjust its strategy to maintain its influence in the legislative body.
