A faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, known as the Concerned Youth Movement (CYM), has voiced worries about the party’s future. The concerns intensified after former Senate President Bukola Saraki suggested postponing the PDP’s national convention, scheduled for Ibadan, citing internal problems and claiming that no serious politician with electoral ambitions would consider running on the PDP platform in 2027.
CYM’s Publicity Secretary, Laide Ajao, issued a statement on Friday emphasizing that Saraki’s comments signal a bleak outlook for the PDP. She urged party members to acknowledge the reality of the situation and explore alternative options. According to Ajao, the party’s factionalization—combined with a group loyal to Governor Seyi Makinde insisting on proceeding with the convention—will likely deepen divisions.
Ajao appealed to PDP members to abandon the party and join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which she described as a more viable and progressive platform in the state. She argued that the PDP has been compromised by self‑interested leaders who prioritize personal gain over the greater good.
The CYM’s call to action could be a significant development in Oyo State’s political landscape, indicating that some members are losing faith in the PDP’s ability to represent their interests. Recent internal conflicts and power struggles within the party may have contributed to the CYM’s decision to speak out. As the PDP prepares for its national convention, it remains uncertain how these internal divisions will be addressed and what impact they will have on the party’s future prospects. The CYM’s statement serves as a reminder that Nigerian political parties must maintain the trust and confidence of their members to remain relevant and effective.
