The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) remains a strong force in Kano and is poised to expand its influence across the northern region ahead of the 2027 elections, according to its National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed. Despite recent defections—two House of Representatives members, Abdulmumin Jibrin and Sagir Koki, left the NNPP to join the All Progressives Congress (APC)—Ahmed is confident that the party’s fortunes remain intact. He said the defections were reportedly due to internal issues within the NNPP but have not weakened the party. “I have just two words for them: good luck. Their exit is not a minus to NNPP. In fact, more people are joining the party every day, especially in Kano,” he said.
The party’s strong foothold in Kano is expected to serve as a launching pad for expansion into other major northern states, including Jigawa and Kaduna, as the 2027 elections approach. Ahmed revealed that the NNPP is open to forming alliances with other political groups to strengthen its chances in the upcoming polls. The party is also seeking to reclaim mandates it believes were lost due to irregularities, such as in Taraba, where it claims to have won the last election.
Recent defections are not isolated incidents; several other members from Kano and Jigawa have also moved to the APC in recent months. Nevertheless, Ahmed remains upbeat about the party’s prospects, citing the influx of new members and the party’s strong organization in Kano. As the 2027 elections draw near, the NNPP’s strategy and alliances will be closely watched, particularly in the northern region, where the party aims to make significant inroads. With its focus on expansion and reclaiming lost mandates, the NNPP is poised to be a major player in the upcoming elections.
