China’s exports of batteries and battery energy storage systems (BESS) have reached a record high in 2025, with a 24% increase from the previous year over the first nine months. According to data from energy think tank Ember, batteries have been China’s most lucrative clean energy technology export since mid-2022, generating approximately $60 billion in export receipts so far this year. This surpasses the country’s year-to-date export earnings from electric vehicles, grid components, renewable energy infrastructure, and cooling equipment.
China’s dominance in battery technology manufacturing and exports has enabled the country to capitalize on the global boom in demand for batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs) and power networks. The top markets for China’s battery exports include Germany, the United States, and Vietnam, with 23 different nations purchasing $500 million or more of Chinese-made batteries so far in 2025. Germany has posted the largest annual rise in purchases, with receipts up by $2.5 billion compared to the same period in 2024.
Regionally, Europe is the top destination for China’s battery exports, accounting for 42% of all exports, followed by Asia and North America. However, the Middle East and Latin America have been the fastest-growing regions, with 107% and 99% increases, respectively, compared to the previous year. Saudi Arabia and Chile have been the largest buyers in these regions, with battery exports up nearly fourfold and 320% respectively.
China’s extensive distribution and service networks have enabled the country to establish a strong presence in various countries, including Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Mexico, and the Philippines. These countries have ambitious goals for solar power generation and electric vehicle sales, which are heavily dependent on batteries. As a result, China has become a critical player in the global battery market, with 114 different countries or territories purchasing $10 million or more of Chinese batteries so far in 2025.
The significance of China’s battery exports extends beyond the country’s economic benefits, as it also underscores the global shift towards clean energy technologies. As the world’s largest battery manufacturer, China is well-positioned to meet the growing demand for EVs and BESS, driving the transition to a more sustainable energy future. With its established distribution networks and dominance in the global battery market, China is likely to remain a primary vendor for EV and BESS batteries for years to come.
