Jonathan Warns Against Reckless Politics in Nigeria

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has emphasized the need for responsible political conduct, stating that politics should not be reduced to a platform for unruly behavior. He made this statement at the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, which also marked his 68th birthday. The event brought together a diverse group of African statesmen, diplomats, political leaders, and business figures.

Jonathan warned that Nigeria’s democracy is being undermined by reckless political behavior, highlighting the importance of leadership being anchored on responsibility, nation-building, and restraint. He stressed that sustaining democratic stability requires civility and a genuine sense of accountability from all political actors. The former president expressed concern over the rising tide of aggressive rhetoric and hostile political behavior, which he believes is weakening democratic resilience across the continent.

The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation has focused on diplomacy, governance reforms, peacebuilding, mediation, and strengthening democratic institutions over the past decade. Jonathan reflected on the experience that inspired the creation of his foundation, noting its efforts to promote democratic values and stability. He also addressed the recent spate of violent attacks and abductions across Nigeria, urging leaders at all levels to take their responsibility to citizens more seriously and ensure the protection of lives while safeguarding the nation’s democratic order.

The former president’s remarks come at a time when Nigeria is grappling with security challenges and political tensions. His call for responsible political conduct and democratic stability underscores the need for leaders to prioritize the well-being of citizens and the nation’s democratic institutions. As Nigeria continues to navigate its democratic journey, Jonathan’s emphasis on the importance of civility, accountability, and restraint in politics serves as a reminder of the need for leaders to work towards building a more stable and prosperous nation.
