Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dismissed media reports suggesting the state is unsafe, describing such claims as misleading and politically motivated. Speaking at an Amateur Golf Championship in Port Harcourt, the governor cited the impressive attendance of guests and athletes from across Africa as evidence contradicting negative media portrayals.
Governor Fubara acknowledged that the state experienced six months of disruptions due to political tensions but noted that the situation has since stabilized. He attributed the negative media coverage to a deliberate attempt to portray the state in a bad light, stating that “more than half of the things you read in the media are not true.” The governor emphasized that his administration’s mission is to change the narrative and remind everyone that Rivers State is safe.
The governor commended joint security agencies for their efforts in restoring and sustaining peace across the state, enabling his administration to resume its activities. He also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting sporting events, announcing plans to revive the Governor’s Cup tournament. Additional government support will be provided to upgrade facilities at the golf club and strengthen activities that attract national and international participation.
The General Officer Commanding 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, attributed the decision to host the tournament in Port Harcourt to the prevailing peace in the state. The successful completion of the event reinforced their confidence in this choice. The tournament featured golfers from eight African countries and 36 golf clubs across Nigeria, demonstrating the state’s capacity to host international events.
The governor’s assurance of safety and commitment to supporting sporting events is significant, as it aims to boost the state’s reputation and attract more international participation. With the situation in Rivers State having stabilized, the state is poised to regain its position as a hub for sporting and economic activities. The upcoming revival of the Governor’s Cup tournament and the upgrade of golf club facilities are expected to contribute to this effort, promoting a positive image of the state and fostering economic growth.
