The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has voiced concerns about the federal government’s handling of the case against Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Obi stressed that dialogue is the most viable path to peace and warned that Kanu’s conviction could heighten national tension, especially as Nigeria grapples with severe economic hardship, insecurity, and the fallout from poor governance.
According to Obi, the government mishandled the case from the outset, failing to explore peaceful means of resolution. He described Kanu’s arrest, detention, and conviction as a failure of leadership and a misunderstanding of the underlying issues. Obi urged national leaders to prioritize reconciliation, calling on the Presidency, the Council of State, and respected statesmen to intervene and seek a political solution.
The Federal High Court in Abuja recently sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment for terrorism. Justice James Omotosho found him guilty on several counts, including inciting violence, belonging to a proscribed organization, and threatening attacks on Nigerian and foreign targets. The court held that Kanu’s broadcasts urged followers to attack security agents, burn infrastructure, and target diplomatic missions, and affirmed that Nigeria remains an indivisible state where self‑determination cannot be pursued through violence.
Kanu’s legal team has vowed to appeal the verdict, describing the sentence as excessive. Following the judgment, the Department of State Services transferred Kanu to the Nigerian Custodial Centre in Sokoto. The IPOB leader was first arrested in 2015 for treasonable felony and terrorism, and his prosecution has continued for years, making it one of Nigeria’s most sensitive and contentious legal cases.
The development has sparked concerns about the government’s approach to separatist agitations. Obi’s call for dialogue and reconciliation underscores the need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to calls for a political solution. The sentence carries significant implications for Nigeria’s political landscape, and the international community is watching the situation closely.
