2027 election will be Tinubu vs Tinubu - Orji Kalu claims

Abia North Senator Orji Uzor‑Kalu has called for a political solution to the ongoing legal battle between the Federal Government and Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, he stressed that the issue, which has been controversial since Kanu’s conviction by the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism‑related charges, should be resolved through a political process.

Uzor‑Kalu said he has been engaging with the Federal Government to find a solution and plans to contact Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi to advise the President on the matter. While Kanu’s legal team is expected to appeal the High Court ruling, the senator believes a political approach is necessary to address the underlying problems.

The senator highlighted the severe impact of IPOB’s activities on the South‑East, noting that dozens of Igbo people have been killed and many have lost their jobs and livelihoods. He recalled that, in April 2017, he applied pressure on former President Muhammadu Buhari to facilitate Kanu’s release, with the assistance of key figures such as Mamman Daura and then Attorney General Abubakar Malami.

Uzor‑Kalu’s call for a political solution comes as Kanu’s case attracts both local and international attention. With the Appeal Court set to review the Federal High Court ruling, the next steps will be closely watched by stakeholders and observers, and the Federal Government’s response to the senator’s advocacy will be crucial for the region and the country as a whole.
