Kebbi School Renamed After Slain Vice Principal

A delegation of lawmakers from the House of Representatives has requested that the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State be renamed in honor of its slain Vice Principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku. The request was made during a sympathy visit to Governor Nasir Idris, led by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.

The visit follows a recent attack on the school by bandits, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, November 17. During the incident, Vice Principal Makuku was killed, and 25 female students were abducted. The Speaker described the late Vice Principal as a hero who died while attempting to protect his students, and urged the governor to immortalize him through the renaming of the school.

Governor Idris has approved the request, acknowledging the Vice Principal’s bravery and sacrifice. The renaming of the school is seen as a way to honor Makuku’s memory and recognize his dedication to his students. The incident has highlighted the ongoing security challenges facing educational institutions in the region, and the need for increased protection and support for students and staff.

The attack on the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, is part of a larger pattern of violent incidents targeting schools in the area. The abduction of the 25 female students has raised concerns about their safety and well-being, and efforts are underway to secure their release. The Nigerian government has faced criticism for its handling of the security situation, and the incident has sparked calls for greater action to be taken to protect schools and students.

The renaming of the school is expected to serve as a tribute to Vice Principal Makuku’s courage and selflessness, and to provide a sense of closure for the school community. It also underscores the importance of recognizing and honoring the sacrifices made by educators and other public servants who put themselves in harm’s way to protect others. As the situation continues to unfold, attention will be focused on the efforts to rescue the abducted students and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
