Spotify might be raising its prices just after Wrapped

Spotify is reportedly planning to raise its subscription prices in the new year. A Financial Times report cites JPMorgan analysts who estimate a $1‑per‑month increase, which would bring the monthly fee to $12.99. This would be the company’s first price hike in the United States since July 2024, although Spotify has already raised prices in other markets such as the UK, Switzerland and Australia.

The potential increase comes at a challenging time for the streaming service. Some users are leaving, citing concerns over AI‑generated music and advertisements for certain organizations. In addition, several musicians—including Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard—have removed their music from the platform.

Recently, CEO Daniel Ek announced he will step down and become executive chairman, prompting questions about Spotify’s future direction. Meanwhile, the usual excitement surrounding Spotify Wrapped, the annual summary of users’ listening habits, has been relatively muted this year.

The proposed price hike and growing user dissatisfaction present significant challenges for Spotify. As the company navigates these issues, it remains uncertain how the increase will affect user retention and acquisition. With the streaming market becoming increasingly competitive, Spotify must balance the need for additional revenue with the imperative to maintain a loyal user base. Its ability to address user concerns and adapt to changing market conditions will be crucial to its future success.
