Former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore, warned that the party must field a strong candidate in the 2026 Osun governorship election to avoid defeat. Speaking during consultations in Osogbo and Olorunda local government areas, he urged the selection of a candidate with prior elective experience, emphasizing that the party’s success on August 8, 2026, hinges on choosing a viable aspirant.
Omisore cautioned against allowing the party ticket to be decided by individual preference, insisting that the governorship should be a collective decision among stakeholders. He also warned against selecting a candidate based on personal relationships, stressing that the primary consideration must be the candidate’s ability to deliver results.
The former secretary disclosed that stakeholders have urged him to contest the 2026 Osun governorship election to address perceived shortcomings in the incumbent’s governance. Consequently, he has declared his interest in running and called on party members to support him in the primary election scheduled for December 13, 2025.
Consultation Coordinator Ajibola Famurewa reported a positive response from the local governments visited, noting widespread acceptance and support for Omisore’s candidacy. Famurewa expressed confidence that Omisore will emerge as the APC’s flag bearer on December 13, 2025.
The Osun governorship election is set for August 8, 2026, and the APC’s choice of candidate is expected to play a decisive role in the outcome. With Omisore’s declaration and the consultation process underway, the party is moving toward selecting its candidate, and the December 13, 2025, primary will be a crucial step influencing the party’s prospects in the 2026 poll.
