Nigeria Gas Output Doubles with Innovative Well Intervention

NNPC/Heirs Energies JV Adds Over 135 MMscf/d To Gas Supply • Channels Television

The NNPC/Heirs Energies OML 17 Joint Venture has successfully completed a pioneering rigless recompletion of a non-associated gas well, resulting in a significant increase in gas output. The innovative intervention, a first in Nigeria, has doubled the joint venture’s gas production to a peak of 135 million standard cubic feet per day. This substantial boost to domestic gas supply is expected to strengthen the nation’s energy security.

The increased gas production has had a profound impact on power generation, particularly in the eastern network. Transcorp PLC’s TransAfam Power plant, a leading power generation facility in Nigeria, has quadrupled its output from an average of 50 megawatts to over 180 megawatts, with peaks of 200 megawatts. Other power plants supplied by the network, including First Independent Power Limited and Geometric Power, have also reported more stable operations and higher generation. The combined output of these power plants has surged from around 100 megawatts to over 350 megawatts.

This increased power generation is sufficient to provide energy for hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses, reducing blackouts and supporting critical infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, and factories. The operation has garnered high-level recognition, with Olu Verheijen, Special Adviser to the President on Energy, congratulating the Heirs Energies team on their achievement.

The well at the center of this success had previously been shut in due to excessive water production. However, Heirs Energies engineered a rigless through-tubing recompletion into an untapped reservoir interval, completing the operation safely and efficiently. The project was completed at just 15% of the cost of drilling a new well, setting a new standard for rigless solutions in Nigeria’s upstream sector.

The NNPC/Heirs Energies OML 17 Joint Venture’s achievement demonstrates the power of partnership, disciplined execution, and innovation in driving substantial value for Nigeria. The joint venture continues to advance gas-focused, innovation-driven developments, aiming to expand domestic gas supply, strengthen electricity generation, and support broader economic and industrial growth. With this milestone, Heirs Energies reinforces its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s gas-to-power agenda through responsible and performance-driven upstream operations.
