Trump declares Venezuelan airspace closed — RT World News

The United States has announced the closure of airspace “above and surrounding” Venezuela, with President Donald Trump saying that action against alleged drug‑trafficking networks in the country will be taken “very soon.” This move comes amid heightened tensions between the two nations, as Trump repeatedly accuses the Venezuelan government of involvement in the illicit drug trade.

The U.S. military has been active in the region, carrying out more than 20 strikes on small boats in international waters in the Caribbean since early September. Those attacks have resulted in the deaths of over 80 people. In addition, the United States launched Operation Southern Spear, a campaign targeting “narcoterrorists” that has deployed over a dozen warships and 15,000 personnel.

Trump has consistently rejected Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s claims of innocence, alleging instead that Maduro personally leads a major drug‑trafficking organization. The United States has increased its bounty on Maduro to $50 million, further straining bilateral relations.

In response to the U.S. military buildup, Maduro placed Venezuela’s armed forces on high alert and staged a series of exercises. He warned the United States against initiating “a crazy war,” denied any involvement in illicit narcotics trafficking, and characterized the accusations as part of Washington’s effort to topple him.

The closure of Venezuelan airspace is the latest escalation in the ongoing dispute. While the United States has not provided details on the scope of the closure, the action is likely to have significant implications for airlines and other aircraft operating in the region. As the situation unfolds, it remains uncertain what further steps the United States will take and how Venezuela will respond.
