Former Jigawa State Governor Alhaji Sule Lamido has given the Peoples Democratic Party a 10-day ultimatum to resolve its internal crisis. He is calling for the dissolution of the recent Ibadan elective convention and the formation of a national caretaker committee. Lamido made this statement while addressing his supporters at his office in Kano, citing concerns over the party’s lingering crisis and his own sidelining by “new forces” within the PDP.
The former governor expressed that the current turmoil is partly an attempt to undermine his political relevance. He insisted that his actions are aimed at protecting the party’s legacy and defending his fundamental rights, which he claims have been violated. According to Lamido, Umar Damagum and Samuel Anyanwu remain the legitimate leaders of the party until their tenure expires on December 8, 2025.
Lamido warned that the party’s lack of clear leadership structures could jeopardize the future of aspirants and serving officeholders. He urged PDP leaders, including Wike and Damagum, to forgive each other and support the formation of a unified caretaker body. The former governor called for a joint meeting to address the party’s challenges and restore its position in national politics.
The PDP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis, with conflicting court decisions and factional divisions. A Federal High Court in Abuja had restrained the party from proceeding with the convention, while an Oyo State High Court granted clearance for the event. The internal strife worsened when a faction aligned with Nyesom Wike boycotted the Ibadan convention, declaring it illegal and unconstitutional. Several state chapters, including Rivers State, rejected the convention, citing breakdowns in communication and disregard for due process.
Lamido appealed to his supporters to remain calm and patient until December 8 to see how events unfold. The PDP’s leadership crisis has significant implications for the party’s future and its ability to contest upcoming elections. With the 10-day ultimatum, the party is under pressure to resolve its internal issues and establish a clear leadership structure to move forward. The outcome of this crisis will be crucial in determining the PDP’s role in Nigerian politics.
