A former governor of Edo State, Oserheimen Osunbor, and a former governorship aspirant, Kenneth Imasuagbon, have expressed concern over the rising levels of insecurity, hunger, and poverty in Nigeria. The duo made their comments during the opening of the African Democratic Congress offices across the five local government areas in Edo Central Senatorial District.
Osunbor described the office openings as a historic moment for the party, stating that the ADC is a coalition of political groups united by a commitment to the welfare and security of Nigerians. He criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress for allegedly failing to safeguard citizens, citing the party’s neglect of its constitutional obligation to protect citizens under Section 14(2)(b).
The former governor noted that insecurity has taken over many parts of the country, with people afraid to go to their farms. He also mentioned that Boko Haram’s goal of closing schools in Nigeria has been achieved, with many schools in the Northern part of the country currently closed.
Imasuagbon, who donated the new secretariats, condemned the worsening hardship across the country, stating that even during the military era, the situation was not as harsh. He blamed the APC-led administration for the insecurity and hunger, particularly in Edo Central, where people can no longer farm due to the presence of marauders and bandits.
Addressing President Bola Tinubu directly, Imasuagbon asked if this is the kind of country he wants to bequeath to future generations. He urged Nigerians to rise and defend their fatherland, ensuring that the APC is voted out in 2027.
The Edo State ADC Chairman, Kennedy Odion, also decried the socio-economic hardship, insisting that Nigerians must take action to reclaim the nation in 2027. The ceremony was attended by several party stalwarts, who reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The event also featured a senatorial meeting hosted by Imasuagbon, where free bags of rice were distributed to members ahead of the yuletide season. This move is seen as a gesture of goodwill and a demonstration of the party’s commitment to the welfare of its members.
The African Democratic Congress has been gaining momentum in recent months, with Imasuagbon joining the party on July 23. Known as the ‘Rice Man,’ he has previously contested for the governorship under different parties and has expressed his commitment to working with parties that genuinely pursue change in Nigeria and Edo State. The party’s growth and activities are being closely watched as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.
