Hakeem Baba‑Ahmed, former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, has called on the National Assembly to conduct a thorough examination of the latest ambassadorial nominees. Speaking on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics,” he stressed the need for rigorous scrutiny of each nominee’s background, integrity and record.
President Tinubu recently nominated 32 individuals as ambassadors, a list that includes former governors, politicians and public figures such as Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Mahmood Yakubu, Femi Fani‑Kayode and Reno Omokri. Baba‑Ahmed warned that the Assembly should prioritize personal integrity over political, regional or ethnic considerations when evaluating the candidates. He also expressed disappointment at the delayed release of the list, noting that it should have been made public much earlier.
The nominated ambassadors will now undergo a vetting process by the National Assembly before their appointments are confirmed. This process is expected to involve a comprehensive assessment of their qualifications, experience and suitability for the diplomatic roles. Such scrutiny is essential to ensure that Nigeria is represented by individuals who meet the highest standards of integrity and competence.
The release of the ambassadorial list has generated considerable interest and debate, with many Nigerians awaiting the outcome of the vetting. The Assembly’s decisions will have significant implications for the country’s diplomatic relations and international representation, and it is anticipated that the legislature will act in the nation’s best interests, ensuring that the nominees meet the required standards.
