Darkness looms in Nigeria as GenCos threaten shutdown over unpaid N4tn debt

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has linked the current power outage in parts of Abuja to maintenance work being carried out by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). In a statement released on Monday, AEDC explained that TCN is performing maintenance at the Katampe Transmission Substation on December 1 and 2, 2025, which has disrupted bulk electricity supply to several areas of the city.

The outage affects a wide range of locations, including Bwari, Living Faith Church, Dutse Makaranta, Dutse Bokma, the Military Pension Board, Jigo Community, Peyi Community, Ushafa, War College Quarters, Sabongari, the Law School, and GSS Dutse, among others. Additional neighborhoods experiencing power loss are Customary Court (part of Jahi), Kado Fish Market, part of Lifecamp, Karmo, part of Idu, Total Marbles, Airy Gas, D&T, Sabon Wuse, Dikko, the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Mabuchi Village, VIO, the back of AT4, and Kubwa.

AEDC noted that the maintenance exercise is intended to enhance service reliability and improve power supply for the community. The company emphasized that this work is part of its ongoing efforts to provide better services to customers. Parts of Abuja have been in darkness since Saturday, November 30, 2025, affecting daily life and business activities in the affected areas.

The maintenance is expected to be completed by December 2, 2025, after which power supply should be restored. AEDC assured customers that the exercise is necessary to improve overall service quality and reduce future disruptions. While the city awaits the completion of the work, residents and businesses are advised to make necessary arrangements to mitigate the impact of the outage.
