President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired Major General, will travel from Kigali, Rwanda, to Doha, Qatar, to attend the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries. The conference, held from March 5 to 9, carries the theme “From Potential to Prosperity” and occurs once every decade. It offers a platform for the international community to support sustainable development in LDCs and help them progress toward prosperity.

According to the President’s spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, the invitation came from Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. While in Doha, President Buhari will reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to assisting the world’s most vulnerable nations in meeting their development challenges. He will also highlight the various forms of assistance the Nigerian government has provided to these countries over time.

Shehu noted that many LDCs struggle to find sustainable solutions to poverty, climate‑change impacts, food and energy crises, and high debt burdens. The Nigerian leader will vigorously emphasize the need for sustainable solutions to these severe challenges. The summit will bring together world leaders, the private sector, civil society, and youth organisations to share developmental ideas, mobilise political will, and foster solidarity, action, and solutions that can transform LDCs.

Key topics at the summit include addressing inadequate health facilities, climate change, food insecurity, hunger, and weak or non‑existent infrastructure, all of which hinder progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. President Buhari’s delegation, which includes several ministers and senior officials, is expected to use the visit to sign agreements and memoranda of understanding with the Qatari government. The President is slated to return to Nigeria on Monday.
