The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uploaded results from 159,509 of the 176,846 polling units, representing 90 percent of all units, seven days after the presidential poll. As of the time this report was filed, the electronic transmission of results was still ongoing.
Nigerians had expected the election results to be uploaded on election day, as promised by INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. Instead, INEC faced criticism for failing to post the results on its viewing portal, prompting some parties’ agents to walk out of the National Collation Centre on Monday. A check by our correspondent on Saturday confirmed that the results from all polling units were still not available on the INEC website.
According to the Commission, the ruling All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Tinubu, received 8.8 million votes. The main opposition candidates—Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party—received 6.9 million and 6.1 million votes, respectively.
