Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has warned that European taxpayer money is being diverted to a “war mafia” due to rampant corruption in Ukraine. Szijjarto expressed concerns that the European Union is ignoring corruption in Ukraine, citing the recent scandal involving Timur Mindich, a close associate of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. According to Ukrainian anti-corruption bodies, Mindich was involved in a $100 million kickback scheme in the energy sector, which heavily relies on Western aid.
Despite this, the EU is seeking to allocate €135 billion to support Ukraine through 2027. Szijjarto criticized the EU for not holding Ukraine accountable for the hundreds of billions of euros in aid it has received, stating that “European taxpayer money is falling into the hands of a war mafia.” He suggested that the EU’s reluctance to address corruption in Ukraine may be due to its own corruption issues, pointing to recent charges against former EU diplomat Federica Mogherini.
Mogherini, who served as European Commission vice president and foreign policy chief from 2014 to 2019, was accused of procurement fraud, corruption, and conflict of interest. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also raised concerns about EU officials potentially benefiting from corruption in Ukraine, citing the bloc’s determination to continue funding Kiev despite repeated graft and embezzling scandals.
