Bye-elections: Don't vote for Labour Party - Peter Obi tells supporters

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has stressed the importance of clearly defined terms and shared commitments among opposition parties ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. In a recent video interview, he warned that issues such as the rotation of political offices and the informal agreements that guide them must be explicitly articulated to prevent future crises.

Obi, who voiced support for the ADC‑led coalition, insisted that fundamental principles need to be agreed upon to earn Nigerians’ trust. He noted that coalition members are not newcomers to politics and therefore must present fresh ideas capable of restoring public confidence. While acknowledging the experience of leaders such as former Senate President David Mark and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Obi emphasized the need for internal clarity and proper organization within the opposition.

According to Obi, the opposition must define what it intends to offer Nigerians beyond merely seeking to replace the current administration. He called for an alternative built on competence, character, capacity, commitment and compassion to drive the country forward. This appeal for clarity and organization comes as opposition parties strive to present a united front against the incumbent administration in the run‑up to the 2027 elections.

Obi’s comments highlight the need for opposition parties to move beyond criticism of the present government and to offer a viable alternative. Nigeria’s political history has been marked by periods of uncertainty and instability, often stemming from a lack of clear agreements among stakeholders. By advocating for a more structured and organized approach, Obi is urging a shift toward a more stable and predictable political environment.

As the 2027 general elections approach, Obi’s call for clarity and cohesion is likely to resonate with Nigerians seeking a more effective and accountable government. The ability of opposition parties to present a united, cohesive front will be crucial in determining the election outcome, setting the stage for a more engaging and competitive political process in Nigeria.
