The North-Central Writers Advocacy Group (NCWAG) has expressed concern over reports that the Zamfara State Government, led by Governor Dauda Lawal, has secretly released a significant number of convicted terrorists and bandits from correctional facilities within the state. According to a statement issued by the group’s coordinator, Irimiya Dunat, in Jos, the alleged release involves 291 Boko Haram members and 219 armed bandits who were freed under unclear circumstances.
These individuals were reportedly convicted of various offenses, including terrorism, mass violence, kidnapping, and destruction of communities, which have destabilized the North-West region and the entire country for over a decade. NCWAG has called on the Presidency, National Security Adviser, National Security Council, Ministry of Interior, and the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation to investigate the matter and provide a briefing to the public.
The group views this alleged action as a disturbing breach of public trust and national security, particularly given the country’s current struggles with multilayered security challenges. The release of hardened terrorists without public accountability or judicial transparency could exacerbate the national crisis, NCWAG warned. Nigeria is already grappling with various security issues, and such actions could undermine efforts to address these challenges.
NCWAG has given the Zamfara State government a seven-day ultimatum to publicly address the allegations and provide documentary evidence of the identities of all persons released. The group has also requested clarification on the legal basis for their release and whether any negotiations, political agreements, or election-related considerations were involved. The matter has significant implications for national security and public trust, and the group’s call for investigation and transparency aims to ensure that the government is held accountable for its actions.
The situation in Zamfara State is part of the broader security challenges facing Nigeria, which has been battling Boko Haram insurgency and banditry in the North-West region for years. The Nigerian government has been working to address these challenges, but the alleged release of convicted terrorists and bandits could hinder progress. As the country continues to navigate its security issues, the need for transparency and accountability in governance is increasingly important.
