Dayton Moore, the senior advisor to the Texas Rangers, has explained the team’s negotiation philosophy, emphasizing transparency and mutual understanding. Since joining the Rangers in November 2022, Moore has argued that a team must be willing to disadvantage itself to enable honest, empathetic discussions. He credits this mindset with helping facilitate the recent trade that sent Marcus Semien to the Rangers and Brandon Nimmo to the New York Mets.

Moore, who served as general manager of the Kansas City Royals from 2006 to 2021, shared his insights on the “Baseball isn’t Boring” podcast. He said the Rangers focus on understanding the other team’s needs rather than merely maximizing what they can gain. “You want to figure out what the other team needs,” he explained. “It’s okay to disadvantage yourself for the good of another team or somebody else. Focus on what you’re getting, not what you’re giving up.”

The trade, announced on November 24, surprised many because Nimmo was viewed as a key player and clubhouse leader for the Mets. However, reports indicated that the Mets were eager to acquire Semien for his leadership qualities. Moore praised Mets general manager David Stearns as a “terrific baseball mind” who understands his team’s needs.

Moore also discussed his approach to contract negotiations, citing the long‑term deals he secured for Alex Gordon and Salvador Pérez while with the Royals. He said he often opened the team’s books to players, sharing payroll and arbitration information to foster transparent, mutually beneficial agreements.

Overall, Moore’s strategy highlights the importance of empathy and understanding in professional sports negotiations. By prioritizing the needs of other teams and being willing to compromise, the Rangers aim to build strong relationships and achieve successful outcomes. As the organization looks ahead, Moore’s philosophy is likely to shape its future negotiations and decision‑making processes.
