Wike Vows to Protect PDP from Newcomers

We won't let those we accepted from other parties kill PDP - Wike tells NEC

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed concerns over the potential demise of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) due to internal conflicts and disregard for court judgments. Speaking at the 104th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, Wike emphasized the need for party leaders to respect judicial processes and adhere to democratic principles.

Wike criticized a faction of the PDP for conducting an “illegal convention” despite two substantive judgments from the Federal High Court. He questioned the faction’s decision to approach a State High Court seeking recognition, after disregarding the Federal High Court’s rulings. The minister argued that such actions undermine the party’s integrity and could jeopardize its future.

The FCT Minister warned that the party’s leadership must not prioritize selfish interests over the party’s well-being, emphasizing the need for commitment, honesty, and respect for the rule of law. Wike urged party members to support lawful leadership and unite to rebuild the PDP, which has been in existence since 1998.

Meanwhile, the NEC has been advised to constitute a Caretaker Committee to guide the party forward, as the current National Working Committee’s tenure expires soon. The Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, emphasized that this transition plan aligns with the party constitution and aims to ensure administrative continuity, unity, and stability.

The establishment of caretaker leadership in certain states and zones, such as Anambra and the South-East, is also underway. This move is intended to prevent leadership gaps and enhance party organization. The BoT highlighted the need for internal reforms, restoration of confidence among members, and strengthened compliance with the rule of law.

The PDP’s internal conflicts and court battles have raised concerns about the party’s ability to regain public confidence and move forward. As the party navigates these challenges, its leaders must prioritize democratic principles, respect for the law, and the interests of its members to ensure its survival and relevance in Nigerian politics. The outcome of the NEC’s decision on the Caretaker Committee and the party’s ability to address its internal issues will be crucial in determining the PDP’s future direction.
