Zamfara PDP chairman defects to APC, declares party ‘dead’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State has officially welcomed Sadiq Abubakar, the former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, after his defection to the ruling party. The APC Publicity Secretary, Malam Yusuf Idris, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday in Gusau, describing Abubakar’s move as a significant indicator of the APC’s growing strength and popularity in the state.

Abubakar announced his exit from the PDP on Sunday, citing the party’s weakness and internal crises at the national level as the reasons for his decision. He was received at the APC Secretariat in Kaura Namoda by former state APC Chairman Lawal Liman and Kaura Namoda APC Chairman Alhaji Sule Gabake. Liman assured Abubakar and other defectors of fair treatment and emphasized the APC’s commitment to peace, stability, and progress under the leadership of Senator Abdul‑Aziz Yari and Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle.

The defection is viewed as a boost for the APC in Zamfara State, which has been working to strengthen its presence in the region. The PDP, meanwhile, has been plagued by internal challenges and divisions that have hurt its performance in recent elections. In contrast, the APC has been gaining ground, marked by several high‑profile defections in recent months. Abubakar’s decision to join the APC is likely to be seen as a significant blow to the PDP’s prospects in future elections and could reshape the political landscape in Zamfara.

With the 2023 general elections approaching, the APC aims to build on its momentum and consolidate its power and influence in the state. The defection of prominent politicians like Abubakar is expected to play a key role in the party’s strategy to achieve that goal.
