Nigeria Power Grid Restored with 450MW Geregu Plant

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has successfully restored 450 megawatts (MW) of generation capacity to the national grid following the completion of scheduled maintenance on the Geregu NIPP plant. According to Emmanuel Ojor, Head of Corporate Communications and External Relations, the four-week maintenance, undertaken by Siemens Energy, aimed to enhance the facility’s operational reliability, performance, and efficiency.

The maintenance work is part of NDPHC’s efforts to recover dormant capacity and stabilize operations. In the last year, the company has recovered six previously dormant gas turbines across its fleet, including units at Calabar NIPP, Omotosho II, Benin NIPP, Sapele NIPP, and Alaoji NIPP. These restored units will collectively add 875MW to NDPHC’s mechanical available generation, significantly boosting national power generation capacity.

NDPHC’s Managing Director, Engr. Jennifer Adighije, announced the commencement of restoration works on the 225MW Gbarain NIPP plant, which has been out of service since 2020. This development is expected to recover dormant national power and commercialize the plant’s output to serve critical commercial and industrial clusters within the Niger Delta region.

Despite sector-wide challenges, NDPHC has recorded several operational and financial milestones, including the recovery of critical turbine parts and components, commencement of the Light Up Nigeria – Agbara industrial cluster project, and completion of key transmission and distribution projects in Borno and Delta States. The company has also recovered over $10 million in legacy debts, secured $15 million in insurance claims, and resolved longstanding commercial issues with ACCUGAS.

To strengthen accountability and staff welfare, NDPHC has introduced a procurement benchmarking desk, Computer-Based Testing for staff performance management, and a management support allowance to cushion the impacts of fuel subsidy removal. Engr. Adighije reaffirmed NDPHC’s commitment to restoring dormant capacity, stabilizing operations, and supporting Nigeria’s goal of a more reliable and sustainable power supply value chain.

The restoration of the Geregu plant and the commencement of work on the Gbarain plant demonstrate NDPHC’s efforts to increase power generation capacity and support Nigeria’s economic growth. As the company continues to work towards unlocking universal access to electricity, its management remains committed to transparency, accountability, and constructive engagement with stakeholders.
