Gov Bago Presents Over ₦1.03trn 2026 Budget To Niger Assembly

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has presented a 2026 Appropriation Bill exceeding ₦1.031 trillion to the State House of Assembly. Described as a “Budget of Consolidation,” the proposal seeks to sustain development gains while addressing emerging socio‑economic challenges. In the Assembly Chamber in Minna, Governor Bago detailed that the fiscal plan allocates over ₦270 billion for recurrent expenditure (26.19 %) and more than ₦761 billion for capital expenditure (73.81 %). Funding will be drawn from statutory allocations, value‑added tax (VAT), internally generated revenue (IGR), FAAC receipts, capital receipts, grants and loans.

The 2026 budget builds on past achievements and aims to meet the state’s current developmental needs amid global economic shifts. The economic sector receives the largest share—over ₦510 billion—reflecting the administration’s focus on job creation, agricultural transformation and sustainable growth. By contrast, the transportation sector receives the smallest allocation, just above ₦1 billion. Key priorities for the fiscal year include wealth and job creation, agricultural transformation, strengthening healthcare delivery, and consolidating road infrastructure. Additional focus areas are the completion of inherited water and electricity projects, improvement of education, enhanced internal revenue generation, digital transformation of state‑owned media, peace and security consolidation, and strategic partnerships for development.

Governor Bago emphasized that the budget is anchored on fiscal discipline, strategic investment and targeted interventions to expand economic opportunities and improve citizens’ quality of life. He reviewed the achievements of the 2025 financial year, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability. The governor thanked the Speaker and members of the 10th State House of Assembly for their cooperation and patriotism, which have strengthened governance and boosted public confidence in democracy. He appealed for the timely consideration and passage of the 2026 budget to accelerate development across the state and called on Nigerlites to support his efforts to build a secure, green and prosperous “New Niger,” assuring continued dedication to overcoming challenges and harnessing opportunities for future generations.

In response, Speaker AbdulMalik Sarkin‑Daji praised the cordial relationship between the executive and legislative arms, noting the governor’s respect for due process, open consultations and adherence to constitutional principles. He assured that the House will expedite action on the budget’s passage and remain committed to strengthening governance, institutions and overall development in the state.
