Nigeria Opposition Desperate for Power Ahead 2027 Elections

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has noted a growing sense of desperation among opposition parties. According to Mogaji Seye Oladejo, the APC’s state spokesman, the opposition is increasingly seeking to avoid scrutiny and accountability due to a lack of ideas.

Oladejo’s statement criticized those who have condemned the government for arresting opposition figures on corruption charges related to their time in office. He argued that the opposition’s demand for political immunity from scrutiny and accountability is a result of their inability to defend their records or present a viable alternative vision for the country.

The APC spokesman observed that opposition figures often claim persecution when faced with criticism or held to the same standards they once applied to others. He stated that they seek power without responsibility, ambition without accountability, and relevance without performance. Oladejo emphasized that this approach is no longer tenable.

The opposition’s desperation, Oladejo claimed, stems from their fear of being held accountable for their past actions and public records. Rather than seeking public validation, they are attempting to blackmail the government into granting them immunity. However, Oladejo made it clear that the government will not be coerced into protecting political actors who have not earned the trust of Nigerians.

The APC’s stance is that immunity is not a viable campaign strategy, and narratives of persecution will not erase documented failures. As the 2027 elections draw closer, the party’s position highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in Nigerian politics. The elections are expected to be closely contested, with various parties and candidates vying for power. The issue of corruption and accountability is likely to remain a key theme in the run-up to the polls.
