Morocco flash floods kill 37 after heavy rainfall

Heavy rainfall in Morocco’s coastal town of Safi has resulted in deadly flash floods, claiming the lives of at least 37 people. The sudden downpour on Sunday triggered a deluge of muddy water, inundating homes and shops, sweeping away cars, and severing access to many roads. The affected area, located approximately 300 kilometers south of the capital Rabat, experienced an hour of intense rain that caused widespread destruction.

According to authorities, 32 people were injured in the floods, with most having been discharged from the hospital. The flooding affected at least 70 homes and businesses in the old city of Safi, with rescue personnel continuing to search for possible casualties. By Sunday evening, water levels had decreased, allowing for a more thorough assessment of the damage.

The Moroccan weather service has predicted further heavy rainfall on Tuesday, which may exacerbate the situation. This comes as the country is experiencing heavy rain and snowfall in the Atlas mountains, following seven consecutive years of severe drought that left many major reservoirs dry. The recent rainfall is a significant development, as it brings much-needed water to the parched regions, but also poses a risk of flooding and landslides.

The government and emergency services are working to respond to the crisis, with a focus on providing aid to those affected and preventing further damage. The situation in Safi is being closely monitored, and the predicted rainfall on Tuesday will likely be a major concern for authorities. As the situation develops, it is essential to provide support to those affected and to take measures to mitigate the impact of future flooding events. The Moroccan government’s response to the crisis will be crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
