The Abia State government has assured tricycle operators that the introduction of electric buses will not result in job losses but will instead complement existing transportation services. Commissioner for Transport Chimezie Ukaegbu made this statement during the 2025 Abia State Tricycle Operators Union (ASTOPU) reward and empowerment ceremony held at Aba Town Hall. He emphasized that the state, under Governor Alex Otti, recognizes the significant contributions of tricycle operators to state revenue and will continue to support their operations.
Ukaegbu praised the tricycle operators, especially those in Aba, for their support of the government and urged them to prioritize security and safety by avoiding alcoholism. He promised that his ministry, in collaboration with the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation, will protect the interests of tricycle operators and called on ASTOPU executives to maintain visionary leadership.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation Obioma Nwaogbe added that tricycle operators are already benefiting from the state’s infrastructure development. ASTOPU Chairman Victor Azubuike explained that the ceremony was organized to reward 164 tricycle operators who returned lost items to their owners, thereby promoting good conduct among transporters. The initiative aims to encourage responsible behavior and reinforce the importance of integrity in the transportation sector.
The rollout of electric buses is part of the government’s effort to modernize the transportation system and provide more efficient services to residents. The reassurance given to tricycle operators is expected to ease concerns about job security and ensure a smooth transition to the new system. As the state continues to invest in infrastructure, the transportation sector is poised for significant growth and improvement, benefiting both operators and commuters.
