The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Sokoto State has suspended its planned protest against worsening insecurity, opting instead for special prayers for peace and safety across the state. This decision follows consultations and a resolution by the State Executive Council, in line with a directive from the NLC national headquarters.
According to Abdullahi Jungle, the state NLC Chairman, insecurity continues to affect many local government areas in Sokoto and neighbouring states. He noted that the decision to suspend the protest was reached after stakeholders agreed that special prayers were necessary, in line with the religious and cultural practices of the people of Sokoto during periods of crisis.
The NLC, in collaboration with the Sokoto State Action Committee and other stakeholders, has engaged Islamic clerics to offer prayers for peace and security in the state. Special prayer sessions were held at the NLC secretariat, attended by Islamic scholars, labour leaders, and community members.
Jungle called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to address insecurity in Sokoto and surrounding states, urging authorities to provide adequate support to security agencies. He emphasized that suspending the protest does not mean labour has abandoned its demand for improved security, but rather reflects a peaceful approach to the current situation.
The suspension of the protest comes as insecurity continues to pose a significant challenge in the region. The NLC’s decision to opt for prayers is seen as a move to promote peace and stability, while also emphasizing the need for the government to take concrete steps to address the security concerns.
The labour leader’s call for increased support to security agencies underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing insecurity in the region. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the NLC’s demands and whether the special prayers will have a positive impact on the security situation in Sokoto State.
