PDP Chairman Defects to APC in Zamfara State

Zamfara: Maradun LG chairman, executives dump PDP for APC

A notable defection has occurred in Zamfara State, Nigeria, as Alhaji Muttaka Dalhatu, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Maradun Local Government Area, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). This move was made alongside members of his executive committee and several ward chairmen. The defection was formalized at the Abuja residence of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, on Wednesday.

According to Dalhatu, the decision to defect followed extensive consultations and growing dissatisfaction with the current PDP-led administration in Zamfara, particularly regarding its handling of security issues. Dalhatu praised Matawalle’s past efforts as governor, noting his attempts to address security challenges during his tenure. He expressed disappointment with the current administration, alleging that it has failed to fulfill key campaign promises and instead focused on political battles rather than effective governance.

The defection includes several key figures from the PDP, such as Alhaji Sani Ibrahim JB Danbaza, the Maradun PDP Secretary; Hon. Bashar Muhammad Danbaza, a former State Assembly aspirant; Mallam Umar Attahiru, the PDP Chairman of Damaga Ward; and Hon. Zayyanu Yakubu, the PDP Youth Leader of Gora Namaye Ward. Dalhatu emphasized that the defectors are committed to supporting Matawalle and will not be part of any efforts to undermine his reputation for political gain.

Matawalle welcomed the new members, describing the APC as an inclusive party that prioritizes the welfare of its members. He assured the defectors of equal opportunities within the party and pledged support to enable them to contribute meaningfully to its growth and success. The move is seen as significant, with arrangements already underway to receive additional PDP members in the coming days.

This development reflects the ongoing dynamics within Nigeria’s political landscape, where party affiliations can shift in response to governance issues and political alignments. The defection highlights concerns over security and governance in Zamfara State, issues that are likely to remain crucial as the country navigates its political and social challenges. With the APC poised to absorb more members from the PDP, the implications of this move will be closely watched, both within the state and at the national level.
