The Benue State Government has initiated a comprehensive intervention program to support communities affected by violent attacks, particularly the Yelwata community, which suffered a devastating assault in June. The initiative is funded by donations totaling N1.275 billion, contributed by individuals, state governments, and corporate bodies.
The attacks, allegedly carried out by suspected armed herders, left numerous residents displaced and reliant on humanitarian aid. The Yelwata incident drew widespread sympathy and support from across the country, with notable contributions including a N1 billion donation from the wife of the President, Senator Remi Tinubu.
According to the Secretary to the State Government, Deborah Aber, the disbursement exercise will span one week, commencing with the distribution of food and non-food relief items to internally displaced persons (IDPs). The government has also initiated housing construction for a cluster settlement in Yelwata, and 1000 displaced persons will benefit from a conditional cash transfer program.
The intervention program extends beyond immediate relief, aiming to improve the dignity and well-being of IDPs. It includes enhanced nutrition support for vulnerable groups, such as children, pregnant and nursing mothers, as well as reinforced camp-level support services. A significant outcome of the collaboration with partners is the commencement of a water treatment plant in Naka, Gwer-West Local Government Area, which will provide access to safe and clean water for IDPs and surrounding host communities.
The Benue State Government, under the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia, remains committed to protecting the welfare, safety, and dignity of displaced residents. The government is transitioning from short-term emergency relief to long-lasting solutions to displacement, with a focus on promoting public health, human dignity, and peaceful coexistence. The Secretary to the State Government expressed appreciation to all donors and partners who supported the humanitarian response to the crisis in Benue State.
The intervention program also includes activities such as food and non-food material distribution, resettlement, agricultural support, and education. The government’s efforts aim to address the immediate needs of the affected communities while working towards sustainable solutions to displacement. With the support of donors and partners, the Benue State Government is taking significant steps towards rebuilding and restoring the lives of those affected by the violent attacks.
