Labour Party woos PDP's Showunmi for Ogun 2027 gov race

The Ogun State chapter of the Labour Party has invited Segun Showunmi, a senior figure in the Peoples Democratic Party, to join its ranks and become the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections. The invitation was announced during a visit by Labour Party executives—led by South West Vice Chairman Abayomi Arabambi and state chairman Mrs Olubukola Soyoye—to Showunmi’s residence in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Arabambi said the Labour Party has been monitoring Showunmi’s activities and is impressed by his commitment to good governance and democratic ideals. He argued that Showunmi possesses the experience and pedigree needed to bring a refreshing change to Ogun State, which has suffered under the current All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. Arabambi highlighted the disarray in the state’s infrastructure, education, and urbanisation policies, insisting that the people of Ogun deserve better.

Showunmi described the Labour Party as having a stable ideology, likening it to workers’ parties in other parts of the world. He pointed to the party’s performance in the 2023 general elections—where it polled over six million votes—as evidence of its significance in Nigeria’s political landscape. He expressed gratitude for the invitation, calling it the greatest honour he has ever received, and pledged to consider it seriously. Accepting the offer would require him to leave the PDP, a party he has belonged to since 1998.

Before deciding, Showunmi intends to consult key stakeholders, including President Bola Tinubu and former governors Gbenga Daniel, Ibikunle Amosun, as well as incumbent governor Dapo Abiodun. He stressed the need for intentional good governance and promised to elevate the conversation around development in the state. If he joins the Labour Party and becomes governor, Showunmi guarantees an unprecedented level of good governance for the people of Ogun State.

The Labour Party’s invitation reflects its desire for a credible, experienced candidate to challenge the APC in the 2027 governorship election. As Ogun’s political landscape evolves, the outcome of Showunmi’s deliberations will be closely watched, with potential implications for the state’s governance and development.
