Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, have engaged in a war of words over the condition of the state’s healthcare system. Oyebamiji had pledged to overhaul the sector if elected, citing its poor state as a major hindrance to development in Osun.
According to Oyebamiji’s campaign movement coordinator, Adebayo Adedeji, the health sector has deteriorated under the current administration. Adedeji cited a report by CheckMyPHC.org, which highlighted significant workforce gaps in Osun’s primary healthcare centers. The report revealed that 73% of primary healthcare centers lack adequate staffing, with many operating with minimal personnel, while 44% have no staff at all. Additionally, several centers lack basic facilities such as clean water, functional toilets, and hygiene facilities, hindering effective healthcare delivery.
Adedeji also recalled that during the administration of former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, over 300 primary healthcare centers were renovated. However, he accused the Adeleke administration of failing to sustain this initiative. In response, Governor Adeleke dismissed Oyebamiji’s claims as baseless and an attempt at disinformation. Adeleke stated that Osun currently ranks first in the South-West in providing primary healthcare services, with his administration renovating over 200 primary healthcare centers since taking office.
The governor also alleged that Oyebamiji was part of a committee that mismanaged a $20 million World Bank grant meant for renovating primary healthcare centers during the previous APC administration. The exchange highlights the ongoing debate over the state of Osun’s healthcare system and the ability of the current administration to provide quality healthcare services to its citizens. As the 2026 election approaches, the condition of the healthcare sector is likely to remain a key issue in the campaign.
