Senator Adolphus Wabara, chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees, said he is optimistic that Abia State Governor Alex Otti might join the PDP ahead of his second‑term bid. Wabara noted that if Otti decides to defect, the party would not hesitate to present him as its governorship candidate in 2027, calling the governor “a significant asset to any political party.” Speaking in Umuahia, he attributed Otti’s appeal to multiple parties to his performance in office, which has made him a credible contender for the 2027 elections.
The former Senate President praised Otti’s achievements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, industry and security, observing that his governance style has eased residents’ hardships. He highlighted the Abia 25‑Year Development Plan unveiled by the state government as a roadmap for building a “new and greater Abia,” and commended the procurement of electric buses for urban mass transit, which will further improve citizens’ lives.
Wabara also emphasized that the PDP’s repositioning efforts, led by Senator Tanimu Turaki, have made the party a more credible platform for aspirants ahead of the next general elections. He reminded that the South‑East remains a traditional PDP stronghold and that Otti’s eventual defection would strengthen the party’s chances and restore the zone’s relevance in Nigeria’s political equation. The chairman urged Otti to consider joining the PDP, especially given the leadership challenges within the Labour Party, and argued that the governor would need a stronger platform like the PDP to withstand the ruling party’s “antics” in 2027.
The PDP has been actively repositioning itself for the 2027 elections, focusing on attracting credible political actors and rebuilding its influence in the South‑East. The Board of Trustees has stressed the need to draw progressive‑minded individuals who can help move the party forward. As speculation about possible political realignments in Abia intensifies, the PDP’s overtures to Otti may signal a significant shift in the state’s political landscape. With the 2027 elections approaching, the party’s efforts to strengthen its platform and attract credible candidates like Otti could ultimately determine its chances of regaining power in Abia State.
