Sugar factory completion gets federal government support

FG seeks continuous support from Nigerians for Sugar factory completion

The Federal Government of Nigeria has appealed for continued support from the Emir of Lafiagi, Alhaji Mohammed Kudu Kawu, and the local community for the completion and operation of the Lafiagi Sugar Company (LASUCO). Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Owan Enoh, made the request during a visit to the Emir’s palace, praising the community’s cooperation and peaceful environment, which have contributed to the project’s progress.

The LASUCO sugar factory has experienced minimal community-related challenges, unlike other sugar projects nationwide. Senator Enoh attributed this success to the community’s understanding of the long-term economic and social benefits associated with hosting a large-scale agro-industrial project. He emphasized the importance of traditional institutions and host communities in supporting major industrial ventures, describing the Emir and residents of Lafiagi as exemplary partners in national development.

The minister’s visit was part of his efforts to engage with traditional rulers and assess sugar projects firsthand, moving beyond policy discussions in Abuja. He expressed optimism that the inspection would lead to tangible progress and noted that the success of the sugar plantation would directly benefit the people of Lafiagi. Community support, he stressed, ultimately translates into shared prosperity.

Senator Enoh has been touring sugar plants across the country, including the BUA-owned LASUCO, as part of ongoing efforts to boost local sugar production. The government’s goal is to increase domestic sugar production and reduce reliance on imports. The minister’s visit to Lafiagi is a significant step in this direction, as it highlights the importance of community support and cooperation in the success of large-scale industrial projects.

The LASUCO project is expected to create jobs, stimulate local economic growth, and contribute to the country’s economic development. The Federal Government’s appeal for continued support from the Emir and the local community is crucial to the project’s success. As the government works to boost local sugar production, the cooperation of host communities will be essential in ensuring the long-term sustainability of these projects.
