Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu swore in Abdul‑Ganiyu Obasa as Chairman of Agege Local Government, underscoring the need for grassroots development that aligns with the state’s broader agenda. The ceremony, held at Lagos House in Ikeja, also inaugurated Toyin Adejimiwa as a Permanent Secretary. Obasa, the son of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudasiru Obasa, had been serving as acting council chairman before his formal confirmation.
Governor Sanwo‑Olu emphasized that local government is the tier closest to the people and therefore requires visible, responsive, and compassionate leadership. He urged Obasa to prioritize inclusive governance, avoid divisive tendencies, and focus on delivering measurable outcomes for residents. Discipline and performance, the governor noted, remain the benchmarks for leadership and advancement in Lagos State. He also acknowledged the retired permanent secretaries present at the event, praising their exemplary service and lasting legacy.
Obasa’s swearing‑in follows the resignation of former council chairman Tunde Azeez, who stepped down due to health challenges. Azeez’s resignation letter was read during a plenary session at the Agege Council Chamber, after which councillors unanimously confirmed Obasa’s appointment. His emergence as substantive chairman comes after initial opposition to his candidacy ahead of the 2025 local government elections; he had previously expressed interest in contesting the chairmanship but was initially dropped.
Sanwo‑Olu congratulated both Adejimiwa and Obasa on their appointments, expressing confidence that they will justify the trust placed in them and contribute to the state’s progress. In their responses, Adejimiwa and Obasa thanked the governor for his confidence and pledged to uphold the core values and standards of public service in Lagos State. The governor’s focus on grassroots development and inclusive governance highlights the crucial role of effective local government in meeting citizens’ needs and driving overall state development.
