Former NHL player and analyst Nick Kypreos recently suggested that the Toronto Maple Leafs consider trading captain Auston Matthews to the Los Angeles Kings. He made the comment on an episode of *Real Kyper & Bourne*, noting that the Kings will need a new leader as captain Anze Kopitar approaches retirement. Because Matthews has California roots, Kypreos believes he could thrive in the lower‑pressure environment of Los Angeles.

The Maple Leafs are currently enduring a difficult stretch, sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic Division with their playoff hopes in jeopardy. Matthews’ production has slipped below his usual standards; he has 23 points (14 goals and nine assists) in 30 games this season, putting him on pace for 36 goals and 59 points. This marks a sharp decline from his 2023‑24 campaign, when he posted 69 goals and 107 points, and from last season’s 33 goals and 78 points in 67 games.

Kypreos thinks any trade involving Matthews would likely be a summer move rather than a mid‑season transaction, but he expects other teams would still be interested despite his current slump. The LA Kings, in particular, could be a good fit as they prepare for the post‑Kopitar era and have previously shown interest in top talent such as Connor McDavid.

A trade of Auston Matthews to the Kings could have significant implications for both clubs. For Toronto, it could signal an opportunity to rebuild and refocus the roster. For Los Angeles, acquiring a player of Matthews’ caliber could provide a new cornerstone and leader as the franchise moves forward. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see whether a deal materializes.
