Tinubu Faces Impeachment Call Over Tax Law Alterations

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has called for the impeachment of President Bola Tinubu if he is found guilty of tampering with Nigeria’s tax laws. This comes after allegations surfaced that the Tinubu administration altered tax laws passed by the National Assembly before they were gazetted. The party accused the administration of serious executive misconduct and disrespect for the constitution.

The controversy began when the House of Representatives discovered discrepancies between the tax laws approved by lawmakers and the versions officially published. Hon. Abdulsammad Dasuki, a member of the House, raised the issue, stating that his legislative rights were violated because the gazetted tax laws differed from what lawmakers debated and passed. In response, the House set up a seven-member ad-hoc committee to investigate the differences.

The PRP, in a statement signed by its national chairman, Falalu Bello, claimed that the executive secretly altered bills after they were passed by the National Assembly without legislative approval. The party warned that such actions pose a serious threat to democracy and due process, and that no one is above the law. Bello described the alleged actions as “an audacious act of executive dishonesty” and “a reckless disdain for the rule of law, separation of powers, and the constitutional order.”

The PRP has called for a full and open investigation to identify and punish all those involved. If evidence emerges implicating President Tinubu in the alleged manipulations, the party demands his impeachment without delay. The party has also demanded the immediate suspension of the disputed tax laws until all inconsistencies are resolved, warning that it will seek judicial intervention if the matter is not addressed promptly.

The PRP’s call for impeachment highlights the significance of the allegations and the need for accountability in government. The party’s stance emphasizes the importance of respecting the rule of law and the constitutional order in protecting Nigeria’s democracy and economic stability. As the investigation unfolds, citizens, civil society groups, and lawmakers are being urged to resist what the party describes as an assault on constitutional order and ensure that justice prevails.
