At least five principal officers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Senate and the House of Representatives will not return to the 10th National Assembly. Several senior lawmakers lost their seats to newcomers in the February 25 legislative elections.
In the Senate, third‑term lawmaker and Minority Leader Philip Aduda was defeated by Labour Party candidate Ireti Kingibe, who secured 202,175 votes to Aduda’s 100,544. Among the prominent senators who fell to the Labour Party were Uche Ekwunife, who lost the Anambra South seat to Victor Umeh, and former aviation minister and two‑term senator Stella Oduah, who was unseated in Anambra North by Tony Nwoye.
In the House of Representatives, Minority Leader Ndudi Elumelu, first elected in 2007 to represent Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, failed to win a fifth term, losing to Labour Party’s Ngozi Okolie, who garnered 53,879 votes to Elumelu’s 33,456. Minority Whip Gideon Gwani, who had represented Kaura Federal Constituency in Kaduna State since 2003, was narrowly beaten by Labour Party’s Donatus Mathew, who obtained 10,508 votes against Gwani’s 10,297. Deputy Minority Whip Adesegun Adekoya of the PDP, representing Ijebu North, Ijebu East and Ogun Waterside Federal Constituency, also lost his seat; the APC candidate Adegbesan Joseph received 35,708 votes to Adekoya’s 25,450.
