The implementation of Nigeria’s new tax reforms is slated to begin on January 1, 2026, according to Taiwo Oyedele, chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee. Oyedele confirmed the timeline while addressing journalists after a meeting in Lagos between the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee—led by Joseph Tegbe—and President Bola Tinubu.

The reforms aim to provide relief to Nigerians and stimulate economic growth. They are designed to benefit the majority of the population: the bottom 98 percent of workers will either be exempt from Pay‑As‑You‑Earn (PAYE) tax or face lower rates, and 97 percent of small businesses will be exempt from corporate income tax, value‑added tax (VAT), and withholding tax. Large businesses are also expected to see a reduction in their tax liabilities. Oyedele said the goal is to promote economic growth, inclusivity and shared prosperity for all Nigerians.

The committee expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and looks forward to the January 1, 2026 launch. The visit to President Tinubu’s residence provided an opportunity to brief him on the implementation status, underscoring the government’s commitment to a smooth transition to the new tax regime. As the date approaches, Nigerians can anticipate significant changes to the tax landscape, with reduced burdens on individuals and small businesses and a focus on broader economic development. The success of these reforms will depend on effective implementation, monitoring, and the government’s ability to address any challenges that arise during the transition period.
