Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has presented a proposed budget of N890.33 billion for 2026 to the State House of Assembly, with a strong emphasis on enhancing road infrastructure to alleviate traffic congestion and foster economic growth in Maiduguri. The city has been grappling with traffic gridlocks and deteriorated roads due to rapid urban expansion and the return of residents after years of conflict.
Governor Zulum announced plans to construct a new flyover at the Bulumkutu Jagol area, which will be the fifth flyover in the state capital. This project is part of the state’s efforts to improve road networks and reduce traffic congestion. The governor also revealed that key roads within Maiduguri, including Federal Low-cost Road, Bulumkutu-Ngomari Road, and Gwange Road, will be rehabilitated to enhance transportation and facilitate economic activities.
The proposed budget allocates N536.56 billion for capital projects, while N353.77 billion will cover recurrent spending. The Ministry of Works has been allocated N58.27 billion to handle the flyover, road repairs, and related projects. Additionally, the railway line between Bulumkutu and Kasuwan Shanu will be removed to allow for road expansion and other infrastructure works.
The governor’s plan also includes the rehabilitation of major roads linking Maiduguri to other towns, such as Monguno, Dikwa, and Banki. These projects aim to boost business activities, improve road safety, and ease traffic congestion across Maiduguri. By investing in road infrastructure, the state government hopes to stimulate economic growth, enhance the quality of life for residents, and promote development in the region.
The proposed budget, tagged “Budget of Sustained Recovery and Growth,” reflects the state government’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by rapid urbanization and promoting sustainable development. As the state continues to recover from years of conflict, the allocation of significant funds to road infrastructure projects demonstrates the government’s effort to rebuild and revitalize the economy. The successful implementation of these projects is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy and the well-being of its residents.
