Nigeria Grid Collapse Causes Widespread Outages

❗

Nigeria’s national grid has experienced another collapse, resulting in power outages across several parts of the country. According to updates from distribution companies, restoration efforts are currently underway. As of the afternoon of December 29, 2025, only minimal electricity was being supplied to consumers nationwide.

Many distribution companies have confirmed the grid collapse, with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company stating that a “system disturbance” occurred at 14:02 pm, causing power outages in their franchise areas. The company assured customers that they are working closely with relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilized.

The Eko distribution company, however, reported that the national grid has been restored and power supply to their feeders is being gradually restored. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has not yet commented on the latest grid collapse.

This incident is the latest in a series of grid collapses in Nigeria in 2025, despite government efforts to improve the country’s electricity supply. In August, the Federal Government announced plans to secure a $238 million loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to expand the national grid network. The loan is expected to support the addition of new transmission lines and substations to the grid.

The frequency of grid collapses in Nigeria has raised concerns about the country’s ability to provide a reliable electricity supply. The government has reassured citizens that it is working to address the issue, but the repeated collapses have underscored the need for more significant investment in the country’s energy infrastructure. As restoration efforts continue, consumers are left to wait for a return to normal power supply. The Nigerian government’s efforts to improve the electricity grid will be closely watched in the coming months to see if they can prevent further collapses and provide a more stable energy supply.
