The Nigerian government has explained the national grid collapse that occurred on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at approximately 11:20 a.m. The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), which manages the country’s grid, said the event was triggered by the tripping of a generation company. This caused a significant load drop that cascaded to other generators, resulting in a system disturbance.

Immediately after the collapse, NISO began restoration efforts. Power supply was first re‑established to Abuja from the Shiroro power plant, and substantial progress has since been made in restoring electricity across the country. Parts of Abuja are already receiving power again.

An investigation into both the immediate and underlying causes of the collapse has been launched. The inquiry aims to identify remedial and proactive measures needed to prevent similar incidents in the future. Findings from this investigation will guide the actions required to safeguard Nigeria’s power supply.

The grid failure has major implications for the nation’s electricity provision. The government’s response—swift restoration and a thorough investigation—is crucial for maintaining a stable power supply, preserving public confidence, and supporting economic development. As the restoration continues, the effectiveness of these measures will be closely monitored to ensure a reliable and efficient power system for Nigeria.
