A deepening crisis within the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has taken a significant turn, as Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, representing Kano Central, strongly cautioned Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf against defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Hanga described such a move as a profound betrayal, emphasizing the historical stance of the Kano people against leaders who renege on those who facilitated their rise to power.
Speaking in Hausa, Senator Hanga advised that those urging Governor Yusuf to join the APC do not have his best interests in mind. He underscored that true friends of the governor would not encourage him to betray the trust of the people of Kano, the North, and Nigeria, especially at a critical time marked by fuel subsidy removal and new tax reforms.
The senator highlighted the long-standing political relationship between Governor Yusuf and NNPP leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, noting that the governor’s political ascent was significantly influenced by Kwankwaso’s mentorship. Hanga emphasized that any genuine supporter of the governor would not suggest that he abandon the party and its leader, given the history and loyalty involved.
Hanga also warned that defecting to the APC would likely face disapproval from Kano voters, who place a high value on loyalty. He dismissed rumors suggesting that Kwankwaso might secretly support the governor’s potential move, labeling such claims as baseless speculation.
Reiterating his own commitment to Kwankwaso and the NNPP, Senator Hanga stated his unwavering loyalty, underscoring that no elected official would be wise to join the APC at this time. This statement comes on the heels of an appeal by the NNPP chairman in Kano, Hashim Dungurawa, who publicly urged Governor Yusuf to remain with the party, acknowledging the challenges in maintaining party unity.
The situation within the NNPP reflects broader political dynamics in Nigeria, where party loyalty and alliances play significant roles in shaping political careers and outcomes. As the country navigates through significant economic and political changes, the decisions of key figures like Governor Yusuf are closely watched for their potential impact on the political landscape. The stance of Senator Hanga and other party members highlights the complexities of political loyalty, mentorship, and the pursuit of power in Nigerian politics.
