Aryna Sabalenka has defended her participation in the recent “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition match against Nick Kyrgios, despite criticism from tennis fans. The Belarusian, who is currently ranked number one in women’s singles, lost the match 6‑3, 6‑3 at Dubai’s Coca‑Cola Arena. In the post‑match press conference she expressed confusion over the negative reaction, saying the event brought more attention to tennis and was entertaining. Sabalenka argued that the purpose of the exhibition was to help grow the sport, offering a different perspective that makes tennis more fun and engaging.

Many fans on social media, however, were displeased with Sabalenka’s comments. Some ridiculed her for losing to Kyrgios, who has not played competitively in recent years and is ranked 671 in the world. Others questioned her moral compass by referencing past incidents involving her. Kyrgios responded to the criticism by noting his own victories over top players such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. He suggested that Sabalenka’s ability to compete with him was a positive takeaway, demonstrating that she can hold her own against a player who has beaten the best in tennis history.

The “Battle of the Sexes” match has sparked a lively debate among tennis fans. Some view it as a fun, entertaining event, while others see it as a mismatch that reflects poorly on women’s tennis. Both Sabalenka and Kyrgios will now turn their attention to the 2026 Brisbane International, their first competitive outings of the new season. The controversy highlights the ongoing challenges women’s tennis faces in gaining recognition and respect. While such events can draw attention to the sport, they also risk being perceived as gimmicks or publicity stunts. As the season unfolds, it will be interesting to see how Sabalenka and other female players navigate these challenges and continue to promote tennis.
