'Tinubu runs Kabiyesi govt, Peter Obi will do better' - Abaribe

Abia South Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe has defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move announced on Wednesday in Enugu. His switch follows former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s formal entry into the ADC and marks a notable shift in Abaribe’s political affiliation.

Abaribe originally joined APGA in 2023 after leaving his previous party to contest the Abia South senatorial seat. He now declares full alignment with the ADC, describing Obi as his political leader and emphasizing Obi’s influence on his decision. In his statement, Abaribe said, “Let me also announce that I have resigned from the All‑Progressive Grand Alliance… So as of now, I am fully in ADC.” He added, “Following my brother and our leader, Mr Peter Obi, I wish all of us well, and I know that we’re going to get there.”

The senator’s resignation formalizes his departure from APGA and underscores the evolving landscape of Nigerian politics after the 2023 general elections. Abaribe’s defection gives the ADC a prominent figure, potentially bolstering its regional influence. Coupled with Obi’s leadership, the party’s growing prominence may spur increased political activity and realignments across the country. As the alliance between Abaribe and Obi develops, observers will watch how it reshapes the political terrain and the balance of power in Nigeria in the coming months.
