Greenland dispute escalates as Denmark resists US pressure acquisition bid

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reaffirmed her country’s stance against the United States’ renewed push to acquire Greenland, emphasizing that Denmark will resist any pressure. This development comes after US President Donald Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland, an island under Danish sovereignty. Trump has previously suggested that the US should acquire Greenland, citing national security concerns and the island’s strategic Arctic location.

In a speech from her official residence, Frederiksen criticized the notion of acquiring another nation, describing it as an outdated and unacceptable worldview. She stated that Denmark is not seeking conflict but will stand firm on what is right and wrong. King Frederik X also addressed the issue in his New Year’s Eve speech, praising the strength and pride of Greenlanders and highlighting increased military training programs in the Arctic.

The US interest in Greenland is not new, with Trump having expressed his desire to gain control of the island due to its potential mineral resources and strategic location. Denmark has historically claimed sovereignty over Greenland, and the appointment of Landry, who has publicly stated his intention to make Greenland a part of the US, has sparked outrage in Copenhagen. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has described the move as completely unacceptable and summoned the US ambassador for an explanation.

Denmark’s intelligence service has identified the US as a potential threat to its national security, citing Washington’s use of economic power and military force to enforce its will. In response to the escalating tensions, Denmark has been bolstering its military presence in the Arctic region. The renewed push for Greenland has significant implications for regional security and diplomatic relations between the US and Denmark. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the US will proceed with its efforts to acquire Greenland and how Denmark will respond to the growing pressure.
